
DeWitt began performing on stage at 13 years old. At 13 she began performing on the stage. She graduated with an undergraduate degree from Ball State University. Following that, while performing in summer stock she was convinced by the director to attend UCLA's Department of Theater MFA program,where she received the Master of Fine Arts Fellowship and the Clifton Webb Scholarship. While attending UCLA she worked as a secretary, completing her first appearance on TV in the show's episode Baretta.Contrary to reports that she was mentored by actor Abe Vigoda, Dewitt has said that the two never did meet. DeWitt is best known for her performance in the series Three's Company's run from 1977 to 1984 as Janet Wood. This was a job that she got when she was chosen to play Janet in the pilot episode that followed. Janet was also featured in an episode of The Ropers that she appeared in from 1979. After Three's Company ended in 1984, DeWitt appeared in an episode of Finder of Lost Loves in 1984, after which she quit acting for several years. She made her return to the stage in the month of June in 1991 when she played a part in the Noises Off production at Michigan's Cherry County Playhouse. Also, she appeared in Spring Fling, which was a 1995 TV comedy. A character who was based on her voice, which was voiced by another actress, was featured in the 1997 episode of Pinky and the Brain. She was featured in an episode Cybill. She's appeared in TV shows like Hope Island, The Nick at Nite Holiday Special, and Call of the Wild in 2000.
