Tyana Jones, her TV One character, was her first television show. She was also the character Roxanne in the CBS soap opera The Young and the Restless. In 1985, a 6-year-old Ali began her acting career by appearing regularly on the PBS children's educational program Sesame Street. Her appearances included a show with jazz legend Herbie Hancock.
