Julia Fiona Roberts' parents are Walter Grady Roberts and Betty Lou Bredemus. Roberts belongs to the fourth generation of Robertses to live in the Atlanta area beginning with her great-grandfather John Pendleton Roberts a farmer. At an early age, her father was interested in theatre. When he was studying at Emory University in 1952 he performed in shows on campus as well as in other parts of Atlanta. In 1953, he enlisted in the Air Force and while stationed at Biloxi in Mississippi, he appeared in a show with Betty Lou Bredemus. Eric Anthony was their first born. They got married in 1957. Walter was studying at Tulane University, New Orleans Louisiana. In 1957 they quit the Air Force and Walter started his education at Tulane University. The family relocated in 1960 into Decatur Georgia where Walter began working at Atlanta's Academy Theater and the Harrington Scenic and Lighting Studio. Walter along with Betty Lou produced a Saturday matinee local TV show for kids named Bum Bum and His Buddies in 1964. It was a venture that they funded themselves. They also founded the Actors and Writers Workshop in the same year, which lasted about six years. The couple had another two children. Lelisa Billingsley (1965) (also known by the name Lisa) and Julia Billingsley (1967) (also know by the same name Julie).
